The grievor sought reimbursement of travel and hotel expenses incurred by his family when they traveled to visit him during his hospitalization for surgery after breaking a leg.
The grievor was moved to another city following an accident. His family visited him and he submitted an expense claim for the costs that they incurred.
The Administrative Committee considered the report of the Foreign Service Directives Committee and noted that FSD 54 contained specific provisions for serious and critical illness or injury. The directive provided that where a dependant student was seriously ill or sustained a serious injury, the expenses incurred by a parent could be reimbursed. Where an employee received medical treatment at another location, approved by the deputy head, the immediate family's expense could be reimbursed only in the event of critical illness or injury.
The Administrative Committee agreed with the report of the Foreign Service Directives Committee in that the grievor had been treated within the intent of the directive.
The grievance was denied.
