The grievor sought the ability to use and the free issue of disposable vinyl gloves for post-mortem inspections.
The Administrative Committee considered and agreed with the report of the Occupational Health, Safety and Physical Working Conditions Committee in that the Protective Equipment Safety Standard states in part: "...Where it is not reasonably practicable to eliminate or to control an employment danger within safe limits, and the wearing or use of personal protective equipment by an employee will prevent an injury or significantly lessen the severity of an injury, departments shall ensure that each employee who is exposed to such danger wears or uses that equipment as prescribed by this standard...", and by refusing the grievor's request, the department was not meeting the intent of the directive.
The grievance was upheld.
